Summer Slaves

P1030423

My kids are out of school. My 2nd graduated and she has been having fun applying for jobs and feeling the real world pinch at her (or is that me?—Pinch—“Go apply for more jobs!” It might be me.)

I’m excited for summer because now my younger kids have lots of time to work for me.  I’m not kidding. They owe me money for summer camps.  So, in essence, they are my slaves until they pay me off (lucky for them I don’t use the whip).

First thing to work on is weeding the back yard.  Since I haven’t paid money to put down weed barrier around my edges yet, and we had wonderful spring rains and colder weather that made Roundup useless, the weeds have grown as tall as my kids—about 7 feet tall.

I love when my kids are motivated to work.  It sounds something like this:

“Mom, can you drive me to the store?”

“Why?”

“Because we have a Kohl’s 30% off coupon and I want to buy a new pair of shoes.”

“Don’t you already have about 50 pairs of shoes?

P1030427“But they’re old.”

“How much money do you have?”

This is a trick question, because if they have any money, then they have to bring it to me to put towards their debt.

“Uh.” [the sound of cranking gears as my daughter’s brain turns trying to find a way to go to Kohl’s still]

“Why don’t you go weed?” I say.

With a sullen, defeated expression on her face, but pretty, sparkly shoes on her feet, my daughter goes out and does just that.

I LOVE summer!

Tribute to Candy

Using my Holiday bible—aka the internet (it’s so handy for useful information like that)—I found out that JUNE is CANDY MONTH!  Yea!!!

To celebrate, I wrote a candy tribute.  I’ll warn you that if you’re on a diet, you may not want to read this.  June’s a stupid month to diet though–since it’s Candy Month!  Start your diet in July instead (I promise not to talk about candy then).  Hope you enjoy…and please don’t drool all over your computer.

Candy is

Woghorts & Stinky Caves!

The Cave

The Cave (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Okay, on Monday I told you I would finish out my awards with the 7×7 Meme.  I lied.  It’s actually the Lucky 7 Sheila Hurst tagged me with, which I guess is different.  The Lucky 7 tag works this way:

You go to page 7 or 77 in your current manuscript,

Then go to line 7,

Post on your blog the next 7 lines or sentences – as they are,

Then tag 7 other people to do the same (I’m just doing the sites I wrote about Monday— Continue reading

What I will NEVER do!

There are certain things in life that are just too risky, dangerous, or unpleasant to do.  Maybe you have your list.  I have mine.  But before I tell you one thing I will NEVER do, I need to scratch another item off my TO DO list.

I’ve received a few blogger awards over the last couple weeks, and need to accept and pass them on to deserving others.  But first, a joke to start (don’t award shows always start with a joke?):

Why did the chicken cross the road?   Continue reading

Book Review: Kitchen House

The title of this book appealed to me–because I like to eat.  And once I read the opening paragraph, I was hooked and inhaled the rest of the story.  I love when a book kidnaps me and holds me hostage until the end.  This book bound and tortured me with a myriad of emotions that threatened to destroy me (okay, that’s a little melodramatic, but it was very intense).

The story is set in slave times in America.   The kitchen house was where the more ‘elite’ slaves served–the ones that maybe looked a little better and were ‘fit’ to serve the white Master and his family.  The kitchen help didn’t have to toil in the plantation fields, but their lives still weren’t easy, as this book depicts. Angels in our Life: Courageous Cody

photoMy friend’s 20-year-old son just went through surgery to remove his leg. He had contracted an aggressive form of cancer and after many months of treatments to save the leg, it was necessary to remove it this last week to save his life.

We all had hoped and prayed that Cody would be able to keep his leg. Two legs are nicer than one. But when it came down to the nitty gritty, life is better than two legs.

A few months ago, I was at a youth meeting where the speaker brought up Matthew 18:8-9, where Christ says if your hand or foot offends thee, cut it off, for “it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Continue reading

Squawk! We have some winners!

P1030274If you click on this image, you’ll see I have some friends in my plum tree that are VERY excited about this announcement.  They couldn’t stop Squawking.  And don’t comment and tell me I need to thin out my plums.  I know I do.  But the Mama bird was going berserk with me so close to take this picture, so I decided not to make her PLUM crazy by plucking fruit by her wee Robin babies.

Now I will announce the winners of my ebook, so you can open your mouth and squawk for joy like the Robinettes. Continue reading

Here’s a short teaser and character sketches Continue reading

Hikes around Redfish–That’s Heaven

RedFish Lake 088

I’m excited for school to get out for my kids…because then we can get back to the Sawtooths and hike through some pretty country.  I’m loving my backyard right now with all the irises bursting out, but it still doesn’t compare to the mountains.

These next few pictures are of hikes near Redfish Lake in Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountain Range.  The best thing about hiking these trails is that when you’re done and worn out, you just go sit on the beach and look out across the lake at the jagged peaks.  It’s Heaven! Continue reading

Yippee! It’s done!

EyesofLightWEBv2Maybe you already noticed, but my book is finally out!  Sigh!  Finally.

It’s taken a lot of work and editing and revising (about a gajillion and four times), but it’s done.

Eyes of Light was fun to write.  To read more about it, you can click on My Books to see a summary of it, links to both printed and digital versions, etc.  But for this post, I wanted to share a few pictures that go with scenes from my story.

On my 100thPost, I have a picture of the painting the ‘real’ Suvi painted, which was the catalyst for my story.  Suvi was social, talkative, and super bubbly.  I liked her a lot, which is why I didn’t send her on her way when she came door-to-door selling her paintings.  Continue reading
